BRIDGEPORT HOUSE FIRE – A fire destroyed a mobile home at the 100 block of County Road 1304 in Bridgeport on Wednesday evening. The fire broke out shortly before 6 p.m. and the residence was fully involved as firefighters from several departments arrived on the scene. Several residents were inside at the time of the fire but escaped the home safely, Wise County Fire Marshal Jeff Doughty said. Bridgeport, Paradise and Decatur firefighters responded to the house fire, preventing the blaze from reaching other nearby homes.
THE HEAT WAVE CONTINUES – The National Weather Service has once again extended the heat advisory for Wise County with high temperatures expected around 101 with heat index values as high as 106. The NWS has also issued a heat warning. Fire high for today, which means no outdoor burning is allowed under the county’s burning ban.
THURSDAY IN REUNION – Bon Jovi tribute band Blaze of Glory will perform at Pavilion 9-11 tonight. Parking is $10 a night until Saturday. Carnival Ride wristbands are $25.
BRIDGEPORT ROAD WORKS – US 380 eastbound and westbound will be intermittently closed at the railroad bridge west of Texas 101 for Union Pacific Railroad to perform track work between 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, weather permitting . Traffic will be halted as needed for approximately five to 10 minutes at a time.
NEW FAIRVIEW ROAD WORKS – Wise County will work on the following roads in New Fairview starting Friday: Graben, Old Chisholm, Conestoga, Goodnight Trail and County Road 4717. Oil will be dropped off and the county is suggesting cars avoid rolling as much as possible on it, but if driving is necessary, do not exceed 5 miles per hour to avoid getting oil on the car.
AMATEUR RADIO CLUB – The West Fork Amateur Radio Club will meet 7 tonight at the Paradise Volunteer Fire Department. The group welcomes anyone who is currently an amateur radio operator or those who would like to learn more about amateur radio. Call Scott at 940-389-0200.
MOBILE PANTRY — U-Turn World Ministries will host a Tarrant Area Food Bank Mobile Food Pantry from 2-5 p.m. today at the Church, 306 N. Texas 101, Chico. A mobile food truck will deliver food to the site, and it will be distributed through a drive-thru.
OFFER OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES – Decatur Church of Christ, 2601 Farm Road 51 South, will be handing out free school supplies at its annual Gear Up event from 9-11 a.m. Saturday. Students entering Pre-K through Grade 12 accompanied by a parent are eligible. School shoes will also be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. NON-PROFIT ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE – The City of Decatur has received funding from the Department of the Treasury under the American Rescue Plan Act for uses such as assisting nonprofit organizations. Decatur has allocated $50,000 for this purpose. If your nonprofit has suffered a negative economic impact or been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, complete the application at decaturtx.org/341/Finance to be considered for funding up to $2,500 to the first 20 eligible applicants. The application deadline is Sunday. Applicants will be notified by August 30 if funds are awarded to your organization.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING – The Wise County Historical Society will meet at 1 p.m. today in the seating area of the GC Rann Auditorium at the Wise County Heritage Museum. This month’s speaker will be Hannah Rainey who will talk about a recent archaeological dig in which she participated. The group will not have lunch this month.
CLAY SHOT SPONSORSHIP DEADLINE – The Wise County Clay Target Team Clay Tournament sponsor deadline is today. Filming will take place at Fossil Pointe on August 20. The cost is $100 to sponsor a station, $100 to shoot, or $400 for a four-man team. Proceeds benefit the young athletes on the team.
