Three towns in South Hams will receive a total of more than £ 120,000 to then help them recover from the effects of the pandemic and lockdowns.
South Hams District Council approved funding for Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Totnes after the five towns in the district were invited to submit bids of up to £ 50,000.
The money comes from the government’s Supplemental Restriction Grants (ARG) program which supports businesses not covered by other grants or when additional funding is required.
Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Totnes applied and all were successful.
Cllr Judy Pearce, South Hams District Council Chief, said:
“The offers had to follow the same rules as the Additional Restriction Grants, which were quite restrictive, so it’s an absolute credit to the cities that put in the effort and thought in their offers that they were successful.
“Official letters have now been sent to the cities. It was a brilliant offer from us and kudos to Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge for seizing this opportunity.
Each of the cities will use the money to target specific projects that need support.
Dartmouth – £ 47,000 for:
Support for businesses in La Digue who have had to modify their premises for outdoor catering
A stock market of difficulties for companies that have not been able to access any other form of financing
A matching grant for companies seeking to undertake investments to improve their commercial offer
Other plans include better signage, ‘crab line’ recycling bins and videos promoting Dartmouth
Kingsbridge – £ 30,000 for:
Kingsbridge, Salcombe and the Modbury Chamber of Commerce to expand a “dress to impress business” grant program.
Outdoor cinema project in the town square in August.
Totnes – £ 50,000 to:
Support the community transportation program, including an incentive test park at King Edward VI Community College
Plan a program of events in the city to increase attendance
Support the Chamber of Commerce to provide Christmas lights, Civic Square upgrades, and business support.
