QuietOn promises a good night’s sleep with these new electronic earplugs
Does your “significant other” snore his head like he’s cutting logs with a chainsaw? Do you have trouble sleeping when you are on a plane, train or bus? The answer might be conventional earplugs, but in the technological age there should be a better way to filter out sound so you can sleep or concentrate.
Finnish company QuietOn is an innovator whose mission is to optimize sleep with the launch of QuietOn 3, the world’s smallest ANC (active noise canceling) headphones that dramatically reduce low-frequency sound to deliver what the company describes as Nordic peace and quiet.
Although they are described as headphones, the QuietOn 3 cannot play any sound. Imagine that! A pair of headphones that cannot play music. These headphones are designed to be a pair of electronic earplugs that can filter out unwanted sounds while still fitting inside the user’s ear so that they are almost imperceptible.
The fact that these headphones are small enough to fit entirely inside the ear makes them the only ANC sleep device that is comfortable enough, even for people who sleep on their side. QuietOn says the comfort levels are so good that the wearer will be able to get a good night’s sleep. I tried the QuietOn and they are tiny and fit almost completely over the ear and there is a possibility that a sleeper like me could fall asleep.
Unlike a conventional pair of ANC headphones used for playing music, the QuietOn 3 does not create the uncomfortable pressure wave that many ANC headphones do. At first I thought the QuietOn 3 was not working. However, these headphones work by gently increasing the ANC function, but without creating the hissing or electrical interference that you normally experience with music headphones. They work and are comfortable enough that they don’t even notice they’re in the ear.
To test the QuietOn 3 I had to resort to the washing machine test and even wore them while a hammer drill was being used in the room. The ANC function worked remarkably well. They are not very good at blocking random higher frequency sounds like a TV or radio, but they are great at blocking lower frequencies and continuous sounds. I was surprised at how much the sound of the drill was canceled out by these tiny headphones. However, they are not designed to replace the correct hearing protectors; their main use is to get a good night’s sleep.
According to QuietOn CEO Jussi Lemiläinen, QuietOn 3s are hitting the market at an ideal time, just as interest in the benefits of better sleep health is at an all time high, largely thanks to better education to sleep and the availability of new sleep tracking devices.
Lemiläinen continued: “Everything we want in life – professional success, personal well-being, physiological health – starts with a good night’s sleep. And a good night’s sleep begins with peace of mind. QuietOn 3 takes advantage of revolutionary ANC technology to create a better sleep environment, effectively eliminating the low frequency noise that so often disrupts our sleep. “
Some of the more common noises that can interrupt sleep are low-frequency sounds made by heating systems, appliances, traffic, airplanes, snoring, and even noisy neighbors. QuietOn 3’s ANC technology eliminates these types of ambient sounds by automatically generating opposing waveforms that cancel out low frequencies, resulting in a quieter and more peaceful sleeping environment.
“While white noise machines and other noise masking devices help put someone to sleep, adding new noise to control background noise can prevent or disrupt deep sleep,” Lemiläinen continued. “QuietOn 3 and its revolutionary ANC technology strive to eliminate noise to create a feeling of calm and quiet which increases both the quantity and the quality of sleep.”
By drastically reducing the dimensions of the earpiece, QuietOn succeeded in creating the first ANC earpiece that fully adapts to the ear, without protrusion. Engineering QuietOn 3 even smaller than previous versions was a challenge for the company, but the physical size was reduced and battery life increased.
The size reduction is due to QuietOn 3’s sleep-focused design, which eliminates the need for the circuitry typically found in headphones designed for playing music. By removing audio components such as amplifiers, transmitters, receivers, and Bluetooth signals, the size of the QuietOn 3 could be significantly reduced and there is no chance of interference from electromagnetic field radiation (EMF).
Each pair of QuietOn 3 comes with four sizes of eartips. No wireless configuration or connectivity is required. The earbuds are automatically recharged every time they are put back into their charging case, ensuring the earbuds are always fully charged and ready to go. A full charge of the headphones provides 28 hours of use, that’s enough to last all day or multiple nights. There is certainly enough juice to cover a transatlantic return flight.
“The introduction of new technologies such as circadian lighting and sleep trackers underscore that high-quality sleep is now at the center of people’s efforts to improve their overall health and well-being,” said Lemiläinen. “With QuietOn 3, we look forward to joining this movement in demonstrating the critical importance of stillness to sleep performance and, ultimately, overall well-being and human performance.”
Lemiläinen is right. We take our sleep hygiene a lot more seriously now. Lack of sleep can be harmful to our health and even be dangerous in certain circumstances. If you’re having trouble sleeping, try the QuietOn 3, because there’s nothing more valuable than a good night’s sleep.
Price and availability: The QuietOn 3 ANC headphones are now available for £ 189 / $ 199 / € 199.
