A memorial service for Fred Peterson, 89, of Perry will be held on Wednesday, August 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home and Cremation Care in Perry. Memorials will be donated to educating youth at the Forest Park Museum, Perry Public Library or Perry Parks Department Nursery and can be left at the funeral home. Frederick “Fred” Frank Peterson was born on May 15, 1931 in Perry, Iowa, to Robert Frederick and Mildred Alice (George) Peterson.
He graduated from Perry High School with the class of 1949.
On September 12, 1954, he married Mary Jean McCain in Council Bluffs.
Fred worked at the Thriftway grocery store in Perry while in high school.
During the Korean War, he served in the United States Army.
After returning home, he worked for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 33 years, owned and operated the Telephone Service Co. for five years, worked at the Dallas County Hospital for two years, and at the Perry Community. School District for seven years.
Fred was a member of the Community of Christ Church, Otley Masonic Lodge # 299, and Pioneer Telephone retirees.
He enjoyed being an amateur radio operator from 1956 until today and coaching the Perry Elks Boxing Club. Fred volunteered at the Forest Park Museum for 20 years and the Big Buddy program for four years.
Throughout his life, Fred has raised chinchillas, raised bees, and raised sweet corn, strawberries, and roses. He liked to relax while mowing his lawn.
However, her greatest joy was being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Fred was proud to have been able to serve in Korea and then in the reserve for six years after his honorable release.
In death, he joins his parents, Robert and Mildred Peterson; and a niece, Lisa.
Fred comes from the Peterson generations who settled here in Perry’s early years in the 1840s. He was the fifth generation of Seven and left strong roots for his family tree.
The memory of Fred, his wife, Mary Peterson of Perry, remains to be cherished; sons, Robert (Lori) Peterson of Iowa City and Eric (Betsy) Peterson of Perry; grandchildren, Seth (McKenzie) Peterson Forest Grove, Oregon, Sven Peterson and his partner, Maddie Burkhardt, of Perry and Nina and Nicole Peterson of Iowa City; great-grandchildren, Mable and Henry Peterson of Forest Grove; two brothers, David Peterson and Don Peterson; sisters-in-law, Juanita Peterson and Sandy Peterson; cousin, Neal Picken; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
